Formerly known as Google My Business (GMB), Google Business Profile (GBP) is a free resource for business owners and managers. By setting up your Google Business Profile, you can make it easier for customers to find your company on Maps or Google Search.

GBP is not only free to set up, it also provides some great tools to help you reach more customers. You can add phone number tracking services to your profile, activate a chat feature, and even allow customers to schedule appointments via your profile.

Google Business Profile is available to any business that makes “in-person contact” with its customers. This means that you can take advantage of GBP if you operate a retail business, restaurant, or service company such as HVAC repair or plumbing.

When and Why Did Google My Business Change to be Google Business Profile?

Google My Business changed name to Google Business Profile

The service that is now known as Google Business Profile has existed since 2005. This first iteration was referred to as Google Local Business Center. Over the years, Google has rebranded this service several times. In 2014, it became Google My Business.

Google is well known for its commitment to innovation and this most recent rebrand is representative of that core business strategy. The new name better represents the scope of services that Google provides to business owners via this feature.

While the basic capabilities of Google Business Profile are identical to those offered through GMB, Google has refined some of its tools and features to make using the platform more seamless.

How Do I Add My Business to Google?

Adding your business to Google and creating your own profile is incredibly easy. You can add your business in several different ways.

First, launch Google Maps on your web browser. Next, enter your company’s address in the query bar and then click the phrase “Add your business” on the Business Profile menu.

Alternatively, you can right-click on the map and then select “Add your business” from the list of options that appear. Follow the prompts and provide requisite information about your company.

If you would like to use the third approach, simply click on the menu icon located in the top-left of the Google Maps. From there, click “Add your business”.

If your business is already visible on Google Maps, then you will need to claim it. To do this, search your business by name in Google Maps and select the appropriate result. Select “Claim this business” and then click on “Manage now.” You will have to choose a verification method and then navigate through a series of on-screen prompts to complete the process.

Once you have created or claimed your Google Business Profile, you can edit it directly from your browser. You can also download the mobile app and link it to your Google Business Profile.
