Can SeaWorld Come Back from Blackfish? Reputation Marketing

Hello! We decided to share and respond to an article by AdWeek‘s PRNewser titled

SeaWorld Launches Multi-Million Dollar Reputation Campaign

The article announces the reported $10M SeaWorld is spending to combat the extremely negative reputation they have received following the release of the popular documentary Blackfish in 2013. The film itself has been controversial from the beginning with the trainers who were interviewed in the documentary stating they were misled and the content was ”a complete ‘180’ from what was originally presented to me.”

Regardless of the creator’s deception, the film drastically changed the way much of the public views SeaWorld and their practices in such an overwhelming way. I doubt SeaWorld will be forced to hang up their fish buckets anytime soon from this but, as you can imagine, coming back into a positive public light will be a tough climb. In this technological era where nearly any information is available to anyone at anytime, your reputation is more important than ever. Whether you are a working professional, a business owner, or simply a concerned employee, how will you know or avoid your potential Blackfish(s)?

Managing your online reputation is so extremely important and fundamental, especially if you are looking to grow your business in any way. If you have not already, refer to our last post of 3 Awesome Infographics About Online Reviews to see eye-opening statistics on online reviews. If you are a business that gets any sort of online reviews it is absolutely imperative that you are either employing someone in house (who knows what they are doing) or hiring an outside reputation management company to handle your online reputation. Not only is it about getting more great reviews, it is also about getting those reviews seen. Reviews are only as good as the number of people that see them. It usually will take a few months (1-3) to start seeing results from a newly active online reputation strategy but in our experience, paired with effective SEO, the outcome is bottom-line, more business.
